Binibining Pilipinas bet falls for drugs

A former Binibining Pilipinas candidate was arrested in a drug bust in Sampaloc, Manila.
Police officers arrested Mariafe Garlit for using illegal drugs.

Garlit won as Miss Photogenic when she joined the beauty pageant in 1992.

Police also arrested Ma. Lovella Rival, who was listed as number three on the Directorate for Intelligence drug personality list of the Manila Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

“If you’re in the directory for intelligence at the national headquarters, it means that you’re not just an ordinary drug pusher. You’ve gone big-time and it has been validated that you are dealing drugs,” Manila-CIDG Chief Police Inspector Wilfredo Sy said.

Operatives of the Manila-CIDG, Manila Police District Special Operations Unit and District Police Intelligence and Operations Unit (DPIOU) conducted the operation at a shanty that was considered as a drug den.

Sy said Rival was the target of the anti-drug operation but when lawmen arrived at her den, a drug session was ongoing.

“Hindi natin masabi na nagtutulak siya sa ibang artista, basta siya lowest 500 ang bilihan so kung wala kang pera hindi ka basta basta makakabili (We can’t say that she is selling drugs to actors but with her, the minimum purchase is P500,” he added.

Police said they have been monitoring Rival for weeks but it was difficult to track her movements because she was highly mobile.

The lawmen recovered three sachets of shabu and two sachets of used suspected shabu from Rival. Drug charges are being readied against them.
