Birds cause brownouts

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY: The tropical and subtropical birds Asian glossy starlings (Aplonis panayensis) of the starling family Sturnidae are not only “one of the noisiest species of birds” but also a major cause of power outages in this city. Vicky Basilio, Palawan Electric Cooperative (PALECO) spokesperson, said on Monday that the birds caused the brownouts experienced in many places in Puerto Princesa. “We had power interruptions at the Wescom Circuit affecting barangays San Manuel, San Pedro and other areas because the starlings roost in many groups over electric wires,” Basilio said. The PALECO was able to restore power supply to homes in affected areas around 11 p.m. At around midnight however, power went off again, this time for low frequency in the supply of electricity.
