Blackwater ended the elimination round with a victory on Wednesday by beating erstwhile leader Meralco, 84-72, in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 40 Commissioners Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Backed by local big man JP Erram, the 6’11 naturalized import Marcus Douthit, who finished with 27 points via 8-of-16 shooting in the field plus 14 rebounds and two blocks led the Elite to victory. Blackwater improved its win-loss record to 3-8.
“Going into this game regardless of being eliminated and gaining experience by giving their 100 percent is part of the building process we’re undergoing,” said Elite head coach Leo Isaac. “We wanted to end the second conference on a high note.”
“We’ would plunge back into practice on April 6 with a new level of confidence going into the third conference.”
Blackwater had an impressive start transforming a slim 26-23 first quarter lead to a 50-40 halftime advantage through keen shooting and defense. The Elite doubled their effort in the second half to further stretch the lead to 66-46 at the end of third frame.
They were never threatened from thereon.
Erram finished with 21 points plus eight rebounds and four blocks, Reil Cervantes added 13 points and rookie Brian Heruela seven points on top of five assists and three steals for Blackwater.
KIA traded Cervantes in exchange of guard Alex Nuyles on Monday.
Meralco import Josh Davis posted 11 points and 20 rebounds while Jared Dillinger led the Bolts with 15 points.
Meralco’s win-loss record fell to 6-5.
