• Blackwater sinks SMB, nails first PBA win


    BLACKWATER posted its first victory after 14 games in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 40 Commissioners Cup by beating Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer, 80-77, on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

    The expansion team of Dioceldo Sy banked on the talent of 6’11 naturalized import Marcus Douthit, who finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Blackwater’s win-loss record improved to 1-3.

    “It’s a moment that I will cherish especially by the franchise,” said Blackwater Elite head coach Leo Isaac. “After 14 games, we finally tasted a victory. Hopefully this win will turn into brighter side for Blackwater.”

    Bryan Huruela notched 11 points; nine rebounds and five assists while Bryan Faundo had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Blackwater.

    San Miguel Beer enjoyed a 21-11 lead in the first quarter with Ronald Roberts scoring three points. The Beermen sustained their offensive with Chris Lutz notching a three-point shot to keep them on top before the halftime mark, 44-36.

    But Blackwater bounced back in the second half with Bryan Faundo and Douthit joining forces to unleash a 13-0 run halfway through the third period to snatch the lead, 51-50, with to 5:03 time remaining.

    The Elite of coach Leo Isaac were able to sustain the lead until the end of third period, 60-52.

    Roberts led the Beermen with 18 points and 17 boards SMB absorbed its third consecutive defeat to remain winless in three games.
