KIDAPAWAN CITY: Unidentified gunmen lobbed a hand grenade at a local police outpost in Kabacan town, North Cotabato province, on Monday evening but no casualty was reported.
The North Cotabato police director, Senior Supt. Emmanuel Peralta, said the attack happened in Barangay Poblacion at about 7:05 p.m., causing slight damages to vehicles, including a police patrol car, parked near the blast site.
The explosion, according to local residents, was followed by gunfire.
Authorities said the blast caused fear among local residents and students in the town.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack that took place amid heightened security in the town for the opening of classes at the University of Southern Mindanao and the crackdown on illegal-drug activities in the province.
Previous blasts were blamed on local threat and other criminal groups in Mindanao.
