Blazers aim for better finish in 90th NCAA

Year 2000 champion College of Saint Benilde Blazers are aiming for a better finish in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament set to start on Saturday, June 28, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“We’re inspired from that experience last year,” said St. Benilde coach Gabby Velasco, whose team finished 9th place.
Velasco lamented that most of their losses were close ones (an average of 2.7 points losing margin) earning them the moniker “heartbreak kids.”
“We’ve learned so many things from last year. Instead of close loses, who think of it as near-wins. Hopefully, we could turn those heartbreaking moments to joys of triumph this season,” stressed Velasco, whose first game was against Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals on July 2, at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
He will rely on his core players composed of Juan Paolo Taha, Mark Romero, Jonathan Grey, Roberto Bartolo, Jr., Jeffrey Ongteco, Ralph Deles, Jose Saavedra and Filipino-American Travis Jonson.
