Blazers down Cardinals to keep hope alive in NCAA

COLLEGE of St. Benilde Blazers trounced Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals, 87-76, on Monday to stay alive in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Jonathan Grey displayed fine performance all throughout the match to lead the Blazers’ 11th win in 17 matches and tied host Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers from 4th to fifth position in the standing with just one playing date remaining in their elimination round assignment.

The Blazers will break the tie when they face Letran on Wednesday, while the Heavy Bombers’ were still playing San Sebastian College Stags at presstime. A three-way tie from third to the fifth spot may happen if the Blazers and Heavy Bombers win their final game.

They will wind up with similar 12-6 win-loss slate along with University of Perpetual Help Altas. In case of a three-way tie then Jose Rizal University will clinch the third spot due to superior quotient while the Blazers and the Altas will dispute the last semifinal berth via a playoff.


Grey scored five straight points including a three-point play to pull

the Blazers by at least 17 points, 77-60, still 5:51 remaining. And from there, the Cardinals could only reduce the gap to eight points, 73-81, only 1:46 to go.

The Manila born Grey finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jose Alfonso Saavedra ably supported with 13 points and 11 from Luis Antonio settled with 10. Exeqiel Biteng led the Cardinals with 20 points.
