• Blazers torch Pirates

The College of Saint Benilde Blazers whipped the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates, 86-77, to secure their fourth win in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association seniors basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City on Saturday.

The 2000 champions Blazers established dominance in the third period after Mark Andre Romero went on a 12-point shooting spree highlighted by two triples. Saint Benilde is now sharing the fourth spot with host Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers that also have an identical 4-3 win-loss record.

Inspired by their 83-76 win over previously unbeaten San Beda College Red Lions on July 28, the Blazers displayed an improved 14-of-31 in the field goal and were five-of-13 in the three-point zone that stretched their lead to 22 points (64-42) on Romero’s triple with still 2:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Juan Paolo Taha led the Blazers with 27 points on top of eight rebounds and four assists. He was seven-of-seven in the field hampering the Pirates’ defense. The Pirates dropped to the solo sixth position with 4-4 card. Romero finished with 14 points.
