De La Salle University’s exemplary gesture of lighting up its main building fronting Taft Avenue blue as its way of congratulating long-time bitter rival Ateneo for winning the UAAP men’s basketball championship could only be a signal the animosity between the two educational institutions in both sports and academics is nearing its end.

What happened on the night of the Blue Eagles’ title conquest, tells, too, their respective fans and followers, and those who care to listen, that the extreme partisanship that had existed over the past eight decades or so is now a thing of the past. That should now be replaced by the more noble sportsmanship, which was the message that came across from La Salle’s gesture.
