Ateneo de Manila University and National University (NU) will be gunning for their respective win No. 3 when they face separate foes today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Ateneo battles University of the Philippines (UP) at 2 p.m. while NU faces defending champion De La Salle University at 4 p.m.
The Blue Eagles and the Bulldogs are in a three-way tie on top with idle University of the East with 2-0 each followed by University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University with identical 1-1, and La Salle, Adamson University and UP—the three remaining winless teams in two games.
Ateneo is fresh from an impressive 97-86 rout of La Salle and 79-57 annihilation of Adamson to underscore its bid of regaining its supremacy.
“It’s a good start compared to our 0-3 start last season,” said Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol who will once again rely on veterans Kiefer Ravena, Von Pessumal, Nico Elorde and Chris Newsome as well as Alfonso Gotladera and Arvin Tolentino.
Gotladera contributed 17 huge points and eight rebounds in their last game while Tolentino had a double-double 14 points and 10 boards.
The Fighting Maroons need solid games from Kyles Lao, Dave Moralde, Henry Asilum, Moriah Gingerich and JR Gallarza to pull off an upset win against the Blue Eagles.
NU, on the other hand, blasted last year’s runner-up UST (59-40) and UP (70-59) in its first two games.
