Blue Eagles eye share of lead

ATENEO De Manila University shoots for a victory today against University of Santo Tomas (UST) to tie National University (NU) on top spot in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Blue Eagles will clash against the Growling Tigers at 4 p.m. after the tussle between reigning champion De La Salle University and winless University of the Philippines at 2 p.m.

Hotshot Kiefer Ravena, who scattered 23 points on Sunday against Far Eastern University, is expected to lead the Blue Eagles along with Chris Newsome, rookie Arvin Tolentino and Von Pessumal.

Ateneo is in second with a 4-1 mark while NU holds the solo lead with 5-1.

But the Growling Tigers, who hold a 4-1 card, are looking for their fourth consecutive win to seize the solo second. UST will lean on Kevin Ferrer, Cameroonian center Karim Abdul, Louie Vigil and Aljon Mariano.

In the opener, the La Salle Green Archers will try to bury the UP Fighting Maroons deeper in the bottom of team standings as they aim for fourth triumph after six games. La Salle came from a morale-boosting victory against a winless Adamson squad, 67-48.

The Fighting Maroons, who are still winless in five games, will be playing without head coach Rey Madrid, who was slapped with a two-game suspension by league commissioner Andy Jao due to his ‘point-shaving’ game remarks to the media.

Madrid, who already apologized to the league, accused the referees last Saturday of alleged point-shaving after losing to UST.
