• Blue Eagles eye solo lead

Ateneo de Manila University guns for solo lead when it battles University of the East (UE) today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Ateneo-UE game is set at 4 p.m. while National University tackles winless Adamson University at 2 p.m.

Ateneo is in a three-way tie on top with defending champion De La Salle University and Far Eastern University with 6-2 each.

The Blue Eagles are still licking the wounds of their 86-88 loss to the Green Archers on Sunday.

In that loss, five Eagles were in double figure including Kiefer Ravena who submitted 23 points on top of six rebounds, six assists and a steal.

Chris Newsome had 15, Nico Elorde added 14, and Alfonzo Gotladera and Von Pessumal got 10 each.

Ateneo will be facing a rejuvenated UE side which is coming off a two-game victory. The Red Warriors demolished University of the Philippines, 68-48, and last year’s runner-up University of Santo Tomas, 72-62.

They are also aiming to bounce back from their 91-93 overtime loss to the Blue Eagles in the first round last August 10.

Sierra Leone native Charles Mammie will banner the UE squad along with Dan Alberto, Mark Olayon, Pedrito Galanza and sharp shooter Roi Sumang.

The 5-foot-10 Sumang opted to sit out against UP after suffering an ankle sprain in their game against UST. But the prolific guard is expected to be in tip-top condition in time for their showdown with the Blue Eagles.
