Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University (FEU) will be disputing the No. 1 seed in the Final Four when they face each other today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Blue Eagles collide with the Tamaraws at 2 p.m. while defending champion De La Salle University and National University (NU) battle at 4 p.m. with both teams aiming to get a shot at the No. 2 spot in the semifinals.
Ateneo and FEU are sharing the top spot with identical 10-3 cards while La Salle and NU occupy the third place with 9-4 each. University of the East is in fifth with 8-5.
The winner of the Ateneo-FEU match automatically takes the top seeding and a twice-to-beat advantage that goes with it. The loser will face the winner of La Salle-NU game in a playoff for the No. 2 seeding.
After the double-round robin elimination phase, the top two teams get a twice-to-beat advantage in the crossover semifinals.
So far, only FEU and Ateneo are assured of the Final Four slots.
If UE loses to University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Tuesday, La Salle and NU will complete the Final Four cast.
But if the Red Warriors win against the Growling Tigers, a playoff game ensues between UE and the loser of La Salle-NU game to determine the fourth semifinalist.
UST (5-8), University of the Philippines (1-12) and Adamson University (0-13) are already out of the Final Four race.
