Boat carrying govt forces on hunt for shabu lab sinks


LEGAZPI CITY, Albay: A motorized boat carrying policemen and soldiers to a reported shabu laboratory on Tikling Island in Matnog, Sorsogon capsized late Tuesday afternoon after being battered by big waves, Chief Inspector Maria Luisa Calubaquid, Philippine National Police (PNP) Bicol regional spokesman said, here on Wednesday.

According to Calubaquid, members of the Matnog PNP along with those of the Regional Maritime Group and the Philippine Army had rented the motorized boat to head to Tikling Island to verify the report on the shabu laboratory.

The incident took place at 3:30 p.m. off the coast of Matnog.

“Our operating team is safe and did not sustain physical injury during the incident but, unfortunately, service firearms issued by the government including their personal belongings were lost,” Calubaquid said.

Rescued were Police Inspector Joseph Millares; Regional Maritime Group Bicol led by Senior Police 0fficer 1 Ruel Renolayan; PO2 Jake Luneza; P01 Ely Moraleda together with PO1 Leo Carlo Liao of Santa Magdalena municipal police station; P01 Christopher Docog; and Army Corporal Joven Borbor of the Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion.

Calubaquid said Renolayan lost his service firearm loaded with 30 ammunition and personal belongings worth P8,000; Moraleda, four M16 rifles loaded with 30 ammunition and personnal belongings amounting to P27,000; Luñeza, one M16 rifle with 30 live ammunition, two magazines of Glock 17 9mm loaded with 10 ammunition each and personal belongings worth P10,000; Docog, one Glock 17; and Liao, one M16 rifle, one pistol and personal belongings worth P2, 500.

The operating team and the Philippine Coast Guard are searching for the missing government-issued property.
