Filipino bodybuilders have the potential to excel in international bodybuilding contests, said bodybuilding luminary Shawn Rhoden of the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB). Rhoden is in the country to promote his tournament, the Shawn Rhoden Classic event today at the SM City North Edsa Skydome.
“I’ve been to the Philippines several times and I’ve seen the [country’s] potential to produce body builders,” Rhoden said.
“When I first came here and I saw [Filipino bodybuilder] Jay Catli . . . and I said ‘Oh my God, this guy is a beast’ [he is]everything that a body builder is and nobody knew who he was, he’s only here in the Philippines and I was thinking this guy could win nationals easily,” Rhoden added.
Rhoden said that Filipino bodybuilders are not given enough opportunity to compete in the global arena. Rhoden added that though Filipinos are “hardworking like bees” they still need proper education to excel in the sport.
Rhoden is touring the Philippines with bodybuilding expert Carlos Rodriguez, an International Association of Fitness Science master trainer and Filipina Gemmalyn Crosby, an IFBB affiliated athlete and coach. Crosby gained her IFBB Pro Card by winning in the prestigious Arnold Classic Amateur in the Unied States. She is a Labrada-sponsored athlete (master Ttrainer) representing eight times Mr. Olympia Lee Haney’s IAFS Certification course. She is also an instructor of Filipino Combat Systems. Crosby is set to launch her tournament, the Gemmalyn Crosby Classic in the Philippines next year. Fatima Cielo Cancel
