Meralco coach Norman Black said the improved defense of the Bolts backed by the offensive prowess of import Allen Durham will give them a better chance to enter the finals in the upcoming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 42 Governor’s Cup, which starts on July 19.
Durham averaged 29.4 points, 15.2 rebounds and 4.9 assists in last year’s Governor’s Cup led Meralco to its first-ever finals appearance only to lose to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the finals.
“After a poor performance in the All Filipino conference, we were happy to see big improvement in the second conference,” Black told The Manila Times .
“With that improvement and the addition of Allen Durham, we are hoping to have an even better output in the third PBA tournament,” he added.
In the Philippine Cup, Meralco was eliminated with a 3-8 win-loss record but posted a better performance of 7-4 in the Commissioner’s Cup with import Alex Stepheson.
But Meralco lost to sister team TNT KaTropa in the best-of-three quarterfinals.
“We are No.1 in most of the PBA defensive categories and now we feel the offensive skills of Durham will help give us a better offense and balance to go along with our defense,” added Black.
“If we can stay healthy, then we will enter the last conference of the year feeling good about our chances,” he added.
