Filipino boxer Roldan Boncales stunned 2008 Beijing Olympic Games veteran Eddie Barillas of Guatemala to advance to the next round of the AIBA (International Boxing Association) World Elite Men’s Championships being held at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The 20-year-old Boncales posted a unanimous decision win (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) over the 30-year-old Barillas in the first round of the flyweight division.
“He tried to use one-upmanship but I just played my game,” said Boncales, who won gold medal and was adjudged as Boxer with Most Potential in the 2013 Kuala Lumpur City Day Cup in January.
Actually, Boncales is just a substitute. He replaced 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar in the lineup as the latter got injured during the team’s training in Manila.
Boncales will have his hands full anew when he takes on North Korean Ri Chung Il, winner of a gold medal in the Korotkov Memorial Tournament held recently in Khabarovsk, Russia.
In the light welterweight class, Indonesia Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Dennis Galvan battled the 10th seed Gaybatullah Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan. The game was scheduled on Tuesday night.
Also in the team are London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga and Mario Fernandez. Barriga battles 2011 SEA Games silver medalist Ngoc Huynh of Vietnam in the light-flyweight class while Fernandez fights Imran Khan of Guyana in the bantamweight event.
