Diaz College standout Genesis Borromeo proved his worth and upstaged the fancied bets, scoring 3.5 points in the last four rounds to emerge solo champion in junior play while No. 12 Adrian dela Cruz nipped two others in the tiebreak to snare the seniors crown in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship 2015 Visayas leg at SM Cebu Event Center in Cebu City Sunday. The No. 74-ranked Borromeo, tied with three others at second with 4.5 points behind surprise leader Jude Aranaydo after five rounds, hurdled No. 16 John Cadiz, ninth seed Jeffu Dorog and No. 2 Chris Pondoyo then wittingly drew with No. 19 Kris Olvido to finish with eight points and top the 13-16 division of the three-category event sponsored by Pilipinas Shell. Dela Cruz, playing out of Negros Oriental State University, won three of his last four games, including a final round victory over No. 2 Alan Pason, to pool 7.5 points then edged Jethro Esplanada and Felix Balbona in the tiebreak to bag the seniors diadem.
