ILOILO CITY: The tourism office is thinking of asking Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog for a recommendation to the city council to pass a resolution declaring the resilient and colorful bougainvilla as the official flower of Iloilo City. City tourism officer Benito Jimena said bougainvilla blooms yearound and can enhance the beautification program along the city road network. It is very easy to care for and cuttings can be planted in elevated land portion not affected by stagnant water. Jimena said the “Bulak sang Syudad” is a shrub and can be used as good fencing material being a hedge. It can be planted in the center islands of city streets between the trees, at the plazas and barangay halls. Jimena is also tapping the cooperation of the Iloilo Garden Club and the city environment and natural resources office to propagate the bougainvillas. The Department of Tourism (DOT) is implementing a parallel program soon to start in Guimaras island province. Barangays are encouraged to plant flowering plants in different colors along the roads.
