STATE-owned Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said that employment in the John Hay Special Economic Zone surged 146 percent over a three-year period to 3,473 jobs in 2013 from 1,410 in 2011.
BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer Arnel Paciano Casanova lauded the efforts of the John Hay management in providing much-needed employment in Baguio City and the surrounding areas. President and Chief Executive Officer Jamie Eloise Agbayani and Board Chairman Silvestre Afable head John Hay Management Corp.
“The John Hay Management Corp. is on track to meet its target of 4,000 employees, or an additional 527 new jobs generated for 2014,” Casanova said.
Casanova said that 92 percent of the 3,473-strong workforce in John Hay came from Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba, and Tublay, as well as the Cordillera Administrative Region, ensuring that the direct beneficiaries of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are the local residents.
He noted that about 50 percent of the increases in jobs were contributed by the business processing outsourcing (BPO) facilities of the Inter-Continental Hotels Group and Convergys.
The report also stated that locators in the John Hay SEZ increased by 41 percent in the same three-year period, registering 110 locators in 2013 from 78 locators in 2011.
The number of business enterprises in the Ayala Techno Hub alone increased by 500 percent in the past three years, from only five locators in 2011 to 30 by 2013.
This significant increase was a result of the opening of its BPO facility and retail establishments, as well as the good business climate being maintained by the John Hay management.
Among the new establishments in the John Hay SEZ are Hill Station Bistro, Sumo Sam, Kung Fu Kitchen, Vizco’s Restaurant and Cake Shop, Dermstrata Skin Clinic and Spa, Fog Photo, Switch, and JCo.
The John Hay Management Corp. is tasked to develop Camp John Hay into a premier tourist and investment destination that enforces efficient regulation, ensures sustainable multiple use of the forest watershed, and contributes to national economic growth and job generation.
