Braves gun for 14th win in NCAA juniors

Arellano University seeks to keep its stranglehold of the lead as it tackles Lyceum of the Philippines University even as reigning seven-peat champion San Beda and Mapua try to stay close as the two collide today in the NCAA Season 92 juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Spearheaded by the prolific Guillmer dela Torre, the Braves smashed the Perpetual Help Altalettes, 92-76, to zoom to the top with a 13-1 (win-loss) record, leaving the Cubs behind at second place with a 12-1 slate.

Dela Torre has been leading the way in scoring as he averaged a league-best 21.6 points a game while norming five rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals an outing.

Aaron Fermin is also a big factor in Arellano’s recent success as he leads the league in rebounds and blocks with averages of 10.8 and 1.9, respectively, apart from his 12 points per game norm.

But Arellano coach Tylon Darjuan thinks his team is winning because of his players’ desire to win.

“We can’t achieve anything if we don’t have desire to win,” said Darjuan.

While Arellano and Lyceum (6-7) take on each other at 12:30 p.m., San Beda (12-1) and Mapua (11-2) meat at 10:45 a.m. in another important match up.

The other games pit St. Benilde (10-3) against Jose Rizal (2-11) at 9 a.m., San Sebastian (1-12) versus Perpetual Help (4-10) at 2:15 p.m. and Emilio Aguinaldo (2-11) against Letran (5-8) at 4 p.m.
