The Brazilian pair of Bruna Figueiredo and Mimi Amaral defeated local veterans Charo Soriano and Bea Tan, 21-13, 21-9, to enter the semifinals of the Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) Invitational on Friday at the Anguib Beach in Sta. Ana, Cagayan.
Besides toppling the BVR mainstays, the Brazilian duo also battered the New Zealand pair of Jennifer Tilley and Alice Bain, 21-11, 21-8, to secure a semifinals berth in Pool A.
Topping Pool B are Americans Jennifer Snyder and Chara Harris who trounced fellow Americans Alexa Micek and Leah Hinkey, 21-19, 21-16. Synder and Harris, meanwhile, also swept BVR On Tour runners-up Jenifer Cosas and Dij Rodriguez, 21-15, 21-14.
The two squads will dispute tomorrow the first Finals slot.
Micek and Hinkey are still playing against Thai Yupa Phokongploy and American Rachel Sherman in the first match of the loser’s bracket, as of press time. Tilley and Bain and Hong Kong’s Kong Cheuk Yee and To Wing Tung will play in the other side of the loser’s bracket.
The winner of both matches will then play in an elimination match today, the winner of which will face the loser of the semifinal match between USA and Brazil.
BVR founders Tan and Soriano as well as Cosas and Rodriguez both finished fifth while former Philippine Superliga imports Erica Adachi and Rupia Inck, Lo Wai Yan and Yeung Yuk Mei of Hong Kong, Tan Shiang Teng and Ong Wei Yu as well as Rachel Lau Yui Ting and Eliza Chong Hui Hui were all eliminated earlier.
