There was a bit of a disconnect at the end of TV5’s press conference for the cast of its upcoming TV series, My Fair Lady, led by Jasmine Curtis-Smith. At the end of the question and answer portion, on Thursday—which, as expected mostly focused, on the Filipino adaptation of the popular Korean drama series (the cast’s working relationship, the challenges of localizing foreign material, and very few questions on the actors’ personal lives)—the moderator suddenly announced that there was to be a surprise for the younger sister of Anne Curtis.
Out of the blue, it was announced that Brian Poe Llamanzares—son of Sen. Grace Poe—was at the venue so he could finally meet Jasmine as a surprise. How long had he been stalking the actress, the moderator jokingly asked, as Brian went up the presidential table—seating the likes of Eddie Garcia, Marjorie Barretto, Yayo Aguila, Vin Abrenica and Luis Alandy—with a bouquet of flowers to give to Jasmine.
Instantly, the senator’s son had his own press conference with his lengthy reply. Apparently, the well-spoken grandson of Philippine Movie Queen Susan Roces had first seen Jasmine on a billboard along Katipunan for a local fashion label, and was taken with her good looks. From then on, as his story went, he had wanted to meet her, and was reassured by his friends in Ateneo de Manila University that since Jasmine was attending the same college, Brian’s chances of meeting her were pretty good. He never did though, so there he was apparently, at a network press conference.
(Jasmine enrolled at Ateneo as an A.B. Communications major in 2013 but took a leave of absence in 2014 due to work commitments. Brian graduated in 2013 with a degree in Political Science).
The “surprise” did not end there, however, for in front of the entertainment press and Jasmine’s co-actors, Brian went on to publicly reveal he hopes he can soon ask the actress’ sister Anne for permission to court her.
The Manila Times asked Jasmine’s management as well as several TV5 staffers who had arranged for the “surprise meet”—in an effort to connect the Brian Llamanzares visit with the TV series promo—and they said they had no idea who planned the whole thing.
When asked for a reaction, Jasmine could only say she was speechless in between giggles, adding, “Blanko ang utak ko ngayon,”
Oh and by the way, Brian added that he had rushed to meet Jasmine from a feeding program his mom had held that morning for her birthday.
All that said, The Manila Times leaves its readers to decide whether the “surprise meet” was sweet or strange.
