The British Embassy is throwing its support towards the one-day staging of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Philippines.

British Ambassador Asif Ahmad said the play, which will be staged on August 23 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino by the London based Globe-To-Globe, is an event that is expected to bring theater closer to Filipinos.

“The politics and personalities in William Shakespeare’s work are as relatable today as it was four centuries ago. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play, and is still considered to be one of the most powerful and influential tragedies in literature,” Ahmad said.

He added, “I am delighted that the Globe-To-Globe Theatre is staging the performances here in Manila. I am sure Filipino theatre goers will appreciate seeing a London production right in their home turf.”

Ambassador Ahmad said Hamlet will just be the beginning of a series of British staged events in the country that will celebrate the life and works of Shakespeare leading up to his 400th anniversary next year.

The Globe-To-Globe play is a two-year project that aims to bring Hamlet to every country worldwide with the Philippines set to become the 121st country it will be visiting.

The Globe-To-Globe version of Hamlet, which will have a two-hour and 40-minute running time, will have 12 actors performing 24 characters from the play.

Before staging the play in the Philippines, Globe-To-Globe, for the month alone, has staged Hamlet in China for five days, Japan and South Korea for two days, and in Mongolia for one day. The play is also expected to bring Hamlet Papua New Guinea, Brunei, and Myanmar this month.

Globe-To-Globe Hamlet is being brought to the Philippines by veteran international stage producer Steve Aronson.

Besides the British Embassy, the play is also being supported by the British Council and the British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.
