Eduard Josh Buenavista bagged a silver medal in the Children of Asia International Games athletics competition at the Tuymada Stadium in Yakutsk, Russia.
Buenavista, son of former Olympian Eduardo Buenavista, took the runner-up honors in the boys’ 2,000-meter steeplechase event.
Showing a strong eagerness to win, 14-year old Buenavista outperformed much favored and taller rivals including bets from Kazakhstan, Yemen and three Russians. Ivan Arzhakov of Siberia claimed the gold medal.
A ninth grader of University of Baguio, Buenavista took his pacing from the start, letting the Siberian runner to pull away but keeping his second spot until the last lap.
Buenavista will be gunning for a gold medal in the 3,000m event along with Samantha Limos and Veruel Verdadero in the girls’ 200m.
The Philippines has so far earned three medals for 23rd spot in the overall ranking.
Batang Pinoy 2015 swimming gold medalist Camille Lauren Buico nailed the country’s first bronze medal in the girls’ 200m butterfly event while Palarong Pambansa sprint queen Samantha Gem Limos delivered a bronze medal in the girls’ 100m run.
