LAUSANNE: The international sports tribunal on Friday (Saturday in Manila) backed a ban on Bulgarian weightlifters competing at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of repeat doping offenses. But the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) did cancel a $500,000 fine ordered by the International Weightlifting Federation. The IWF president Tamas Ajan barred all Bulgarian competitors from Rio on November 19 after 11 Bulgarians, including three European champions and three women, tested positive for steroids in March last year. All were found to have taken the banned steroid stanozolol. The Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation appealed in December and a single arbitrator was brought in under a speeded up system because the Olympics are so close.
