Bulldogs bag second UAAP volley crown


National University (NU) survived Ateneo de Manila University in Game 2, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, to claim its second straight title in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s volleyball finals on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Bulldogs swept the Blue Eagles, 2-0, in their best-of-three championship series. NU also won in Game 1, 29-27, 25-22, 25-22.

Open hitter Jan Berlin Pagli–nawan led NU with 15 points on 12 hits and three blocks while Ruben Baysac delivered 14 points, Peter Den Mar Torres had 13 and team captain Rueben Inaudito chipped in 11.

Season MVP and Rookie of the Year awardee Marck Espejo scored 20 points including three aces and Rex Intal added 12 points for the Blue Eagles, who settled for the runner-up honors.

Inaudito was named Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The other individual awardees were Mark Gil Alfafara of University of Santo Tomas (Best Scorer, Best Spiker and Best Ser–ver), Julius Evan Raymun–do of University of the Philippines (Best Blocker), Esmilzo Polvorosa of Ateneo (Best Setter), Rence Melgar of Adamson University (Best Digger) and John Paul Pareja (Best Receiver).

It was a balance game with NU scoring 46 attacks against Ateneo’s 44. But the Bulldogs managed to capitalize on their net defense, blocking 15 attempts compared to the Blue Eagles’ four net denials.
