NATIONAL University (NU) halted Ateneo De Manila University’s three-game winning streak with a slim 64-60 win on Saturday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Bulldogs under head coach Eric Altamirano, establishing a 61-56 lead with few minutes remaining in the game, posted five of their 10 free throws in the last 1:02 to bag the win and tie the Blue Eagles with identical 3-1 win-loss slate on top of the standings.
NU’s big man Troy Rosario notched 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the field plus eight rebounds, Rev Diputado finished with 10 points and center Alfred Aroga eight points with 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs’ defense limited Ateneo’s main gunner Kiefer Ravena’s scoring to only 13 points plus six assists. Rookie forward Arvin Tolentino scored 17 points plus nine rebounds.
In the first game, Kent Lao’s free throw helped University of Santo Tomas escape from a humiliating defeat against Adamson University, 50-49.
The Growling Tigers now have a 2-1 win-loss slate while the Falcons fell to its third consecutive loss.
