POWERHOUSE National University sent a strong message to collegiate baseball after beating all rivals in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines division of the Philippine Sports Commission Chairrman’s Cup Baseball Classic held at the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The NU baseball team, the 2011 season champion, beat perennial rival Ateneo de Manila University in semifinals while De La Salle University, Adamson and University of the Philippines also bowed to the Bulldogs in the earlier stage.
Managed by businessman/sportsman Wopsy Zamora and backed by tycoon Hans Sy of SM Malls and group of companies, the NU Bulldogs strengthen its bid of regaining UAAP crown grabbed by the Blue Eagles last season.
“Our boys’ performance in the recent PSC Chairman’s Cup is a barometer for our preparedness and determination for the forthcoming UAAP Season. Our comprehensive pre-season team build-up spoke well from our previous campaign,” said Zamora.
He acknowledged the PSC for organizing much-needed baseball tournament of high caliber which is a truly grassroots development program for young and potential collegiate batters in the country.
“Although we did not prevail against veterans and former national players of eventual champion Philab Ballbusters, what mattered most is we hit our target of scoring victories against our collegiate rivals,” he added. NU has kept its gem in pitchers Aries Oruga and Alfred Turaray, who have shown their wares in the Chairman’s Cup. Prized coach Saki Bakarisas will be at the NU’s helm for in the coming UAAP season.
From darkhorse to a powerhouse team, the Bulldogs are certainly on path toward homebase of success.
The UAAP baseball will unfold on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial diamond. Zamora also assured the team’s participation in the next PSC Baseball Classic dubbed as Commissioner’s Cup come April.
