At least three people were accosted by airport authorities on Wednesday, the latest apprehension over concealed bullets found in the possession of air travelers.

A United States-bound Filipino-American traveler was arrested after a .22 caliber revolver with five live rounds of ammunition were detected at the final security check at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Ramon Velasco Laorca was supposed to board a Delta Airlines flight when he was apprehended.

The pistol was found inside a clutch bag that was placed in his shoulder bag  after it passed through the airport’s X-ray machine.

Laorca claimed he hastily left their house in Quezon City where he inadvertently forgot to leave the gun and its bullets behind.

Avsegroup director Balagtas, meanwhile, said Ray Salada entered NAIA Terminal 3 to buy a plane ticket when he was arrested for having an M-16 rifle bullet in his bag.

Salada claimed that he borrowed the bag from a friend who is in the military service.

Another passenger identified as Monalisa Rico, 55, of Taguig City (Metro Manila), was also arrested for carrying an M-16 rifle bullet with her as she was about to board a Philippine Airlines flight bound for London.

Meanwhile, a 68-year-old woman was held for a while at NAIA Terminal 1 before being released after she was found wearing a pendant  that looks like a bullet.

The elderly woman, who was not identified, was able to board her US-bound flight when authorities confirmed it was not a dangerous item.

The woman explained to Office of Transport Security  supervisor Elmer Cahatol  that the bullet-pendant costing P3,000 was given to her by a quack doctor who told her the amulet will protect her from witchcraft.

Meanwhile, five people who were apprehended for possessing bullets at NAIA underwent inquest proceedings before the Pasay City prosecutor’s office on Wednesday afternoon.

Those charged with illegal possession of ammunition were: Marlou Rose Española, 27, of Bacolod City; Rowena Otic, 33, of Nueva Ecija; Milagrosa Cadiente, 48, of Pasig City; Melody Valdez, 40, of Pangasinan; and Santiago Peñaflorida, 77, of Iloilo.

All denied having any criminal intent for possessing the bullets.

Otic and Cadiente were non-passengers who claimed the bullets were amulets. They were just about to pick up their relatives at Terminal 3, they said.

Passengers Española, Valdez and Peñaflorida, on the other hand, said they have no idea how the bullets got into their luggage. They argued that they were just victims of the infamous “tanim-bala” extortion racket.

The suspects were detained at Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group office.

  1. What stop politicizing it Mr. Abaya?? We will do it , whenever , wherever , whatever, until you step down from your post.. STupid mind for the Stupid people like yours..

  2. One idiot was caught with a pistol and 5 rounds, his explanation was he was in a hurry and forgot to check his bag. At least the airport security got that idiot. Still have to find out who is putting the bullets in the bags tho.

  3. This government is callous to the plight of its citizens, it is incompetent in the performance of their jobs. All it does is crow about their perceived achievements and most it were not theirs, a bunch of credit grabbers! Problems that beset the nation are swept under the rug , dismissed off hand or place the blame on others. Stupidity is the hallmark of this administration. A bunch of incompetent fools with a holier than thou attitude. Shame on you! Hangang papogi lang kayo! Yellow zombies wake up!

  4. abaya said this so-called lag lag bala controversy is being exploited to discourage aquino admin. well, aquino should let go of the passengers and give order to drop all the charges against these innocent travelers. at the end of the day aquino should go to the bottom line and prosecute/jail these mafia style gangs and not only firing them from office.

  5. One ‘planted’ bullet compromising an OFW or a foreign visitor and subjecting to a public embarassment and crime is serious enough. Unless, this cases are blown “out of proportion”, the ‘callous’ administration will not do something. Inept governments usually shrugs off this kind of problem or consider it an isolated case.

Yang mga bagahe nyo meron pa sigurong sticker ng “OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT” or “HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE” or “OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY” etc. etc. etc. Kaya lahat ng “amenities” meron kayo, di tulad namin. Pero kaming mga “OFW” are the driving force keeping this country afloat.

Kaya ako, sa dami ng kasama kong foreigner eh hindi ko iniingganyong pumunta sa mahal kong Pilipinas kasi kako baka ma-abu sayyaf pa sila o mabiktima ng “laglag-tanim bala”.

YOU MUST ALWAYS BEAR THIS IN MIND THAT OTHER THAN YOUR AMBASSORS, WE ARE YOUR REAL AMBASSADORS – OFW – WE ARE THE FRONT LINER. WE ARE THE ONE THAT DEALS WITH THESE FOREIGN COMPANIES THAT HIRED US DAY BY DAY.

Yang mga ambassadors nyo, puro pasarap sa buhay lang yang mga yan sa kanilang foreign assignments. Libre pa yata ang mga anak ng mga yan sa schooling at malamang ay sa International School pa naka enroll. Kami, kayod marino.

Kung mga bobo/tanga/tamad at illiterate kami, do you think these foreign companies will hire us and continue to hire us. Mind you, when it comes to manpower, we are the preference of these foreign companies.

You see Mr. Secretary, I could go on and on and on and on. However, bottom line is this—–GIVE US A BREAK….

  7. The PNoy administration have been slapped so many times right in their faces with scams here and there yet continue to ignore or dismiss all these as “blown out of proportion” the most popular statements from Coloma et. al. and the rest of the PNoy key figures. These people never get tired repeating the “palusot’ over and over, as if the public are all ignorant in what they are doing.

  8. Whoever has the authority to fire this guy Abaya MUST DO IT now! He can’t do anything right so the people under him are all useless like him.

    • After doing nothing about this scam since he took over the DOTC in 2012 Pnoy now puts ABaya in charge of the investigation. Apparently the President has to tell Abaya what to do and when to do it as it was not important enough to act on his own.

  9. SALVACION CAHAYAG on

Even the United Nations issued an advisory warning to its staff to mind their
luggage in coming to the Philippines. Wow! That is how shamefull the Philippines is
in the eyes of the world. Only in the Philippine and only during this administration
of abnoy. His secretary of DOTC abaya must stop downplaying these incidents by
saying that it was blown out of proportion and stop politicizing it. Do something
to stop it by replacing all these people in the airport who are suspected of doing
these crimes. THE IMAGE OF THE COUNTRY ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD HAS
BEEN BADLY DAMAGE. IT’S A SHAME. DAPAT MAHIYA KA ABNOY FOR YOUR
INCOMPETENCY. MAKAPAL TALAGA ANG MUKHA MO. KUNG HINDI MO KAYA
UMALIS KA NA SA PUWESTO MO KAY SA IPAHIYA MO AN BANSA. IT BOILS
DOWN TO YOUR COMMAND RESPONSIBILITY. DAPAT ALAM MO ANG COMMANT RESPONSIBILITY.

  10. Blown out of proportion? Are you kidding me you idiot. Imagine a senior citizen or in fact any of the victims what they go through. The stress and finianical aspect of each person caught up in the situation. You should be embarrassed to open your mouth and make such statements. The world needs to know about this. Thanks to the media and internet the information is getting out. You (the government) haven’t done enough to stop the corruption in the country. Now you are waiting another 15 days for the findings of the NBI in the mean time another 30-75 people are victimized.
