IN a presentation program held last week by Philippine Mazda distributor Berjaya Auto Phils., race driver Michele Bumgarner reported she had completed her first “testing” sessions in her bid to compete in the North America Indy Car championship.
Bumgarner—sponsored by Berjaya Auto Phils.—is set to join the 2014 Pro Mazda Championship, a series that’s part of Mazda US’s Road to Indy development program. To gain seat time and race experience in the series, Bumgarner competed in the 2013 Pro Mazda Championship race recently held in Houston, Texas, with the race serving as the support event for the Indy Car Championship.
“I’m very excited to get my first race out of the way and to start moving on for next year,” Bumgarner said during the presentation. “Bring the car home safely and stay clear of trouble—that was what I wanted to do.”
She noted that among the challenges she had to face was coming back to racing after a long break and familiarizing herself with the rotary engine-powered Mazda formula car.
“That’s why seat time is really precious. We had very limited track time, and I’m just getting comfortable with the car,” Bumgarner said.
According to Berjaya Auto Phils., Bumgarner is set to take part in two more races scheduled in November and December, both in the US.
