Batangas CITY: Government workers and civilian volunteers have joined hands in saving a juvenile “butanding” (whale shark, Rhincodon typus) that was stranded at the pier of the Philippine National Oil Co. in Mabini, Batangas since July 30. Relly Garcia, team leader of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, said the whale shark, around six to eight years old, measures five to six meters long. Garcia said the whale shark may have been trapped at the pier while catching its food in the area. “The butanding has a few scratches on its body which may have been caused by shells at the pier but is generally healthy,” Garcia said.
