• Butuan judge shot dead, wife seriously wounded

A LONE gunman shot dead Judge Godofredo Abul Jr., and wounded his wife as they were leaving their house in
Baan, Butuan City for a church service on Saturday morning.

A police report from Butuan City Police Station 4 released to The Manila Times, said that Abul, 68, of Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 4, died on the spot. His wife Bernadette Casuna Abul, 65, was rushed to a hospital in Butuan; she was in serious condition as of press time.

Witnesses told the police that the gunman, about 5’3” in height and wearing a black shirt and black bullcap, was on a motorcycle and waited for the couple to come out of their residence.

Police said the gunman shot Abul and his wife just as their car came out of the gate in Alviola Village.

Abul died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds. Neighbors rushed Bernadette to a hospital, about three kilometers from their residence, while the suspect fled to an unknown direction.

Investigators, lead by Police Officer 3 Leoben Salarda, are still trying to establish the motive of the shooting and the identity of the suspect.

Police said Abul was handling illegal drug cases and heinous crimes.

Similarly, on September 23, 2016, Judge Hector Salise of RTC Bayugan in Agusan Del Sur was ambushed together with his driver along the Butuan Highway.

Salise was known as anti-illegal drug advocate and also handled similar cases.
