THE COURT of Appeals has paved the way for the continuation of the trial of a tabloid columnist and his editors for libel for publishing an article that linked Manila police officer Rosalino Ibay Jr. to the illegal drug trade. In a nine-page decision penned by Associate Justice Jane Aurora Lantion, the court’s Third Division junked the petition filed by columnist Jerry Yap and Hataw and X-Files newspapers officers Gloria Galuno, Edwin Alcala and Becky Rodriguez. It effectively affirmed the orders of the Regional Trial Court of Manila, Branch 20, dated September 15, 2016 and November 9, 2016, turning down their motion to quash the indictments. Yap is a columnist for the newspapers Hataw and X-Files, while Galuno and Alcala serve as editor and circulation manager, respectively. Rodriguez is the editor of X-Files.
