• CA reinstates Customs official

THE Court of Appeals (CA) has reinstated an intelligence officer of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) who had been dismissed from government service by the Office of the Ombudsman for dishonesty and grave misconduct. The CA Special 7th Division reversed and set aside the its February 2011 decision, its November 2011 joint resolution and the February 2014 order of the Ombudsman against Mitchell V. Verdeflor. Instead, the CA found Verdeflor “guilty of negligence in accomplishing his assets and liabilities and is meted the penalty of suspension from the office for a period of six months without pay.” In 2009, the Department of Finance-Revenue Integrity Protection Service filed a complaint with the Ombudsman against Verdeflor for alleged falsification of public documents, violation of the anti-graft law, dishonesty and grave misconduct for his alleged failure to declare in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN) certain properties and vehicles which were grossly disproportionate to his salary of P150,000 a month.
