Cabanatuan’s Vergara backs Binay, Robredo

CABABATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecjia: Mayor Julius Cesar Vergara here is supporting the tandem of Vice President Jejomar Binay and Rep. Leni Robredo for the May 9 elections.

Vergara, believed to deliver the majority of the more than 210,500 votes of this first class city, practically junked Liberal Party (LP) candidate Mar Roxas.

Nueva Ecija has about 1.3 million registered voters.

The mayor, a known ally of his college batch mate, Pres. Benigno Aquino 3rd, led city hall employees in welcoming Binay in a sortie here on Friday.

Political observers believe Vergara is harboring ill feelings towards the President after his lobbying for Cabanatuan to be converted into a highly urbanized city two years ago failed.

Cabanatuan’s cityhood quest reportedly was one of the biggest factors why Vergara has been at odds with Nueva Ecija Gov. Aurelio Umali.

The mayor also threw his support behind administration vice presidential candidate Robredo. His wife Ria, running for the Nueva Ecija third congressional district representation against outgoing Gov. Aurelio Umali, accompanied Robredo in her recent sortie in Cabanatuan.

This development reflected the rivalry between Vergara and Umali, as the latter has been campaigning for administration bet Mar Roxas.
