A Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight bound for Haneda, Japan with 222 passengers and 13 crew returned to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Monday after smoke was observed in the cabin. Flight PR422 just took off at 9:32 a.m. at the airport’s runway when the pilot and first officer radioed the Manila Control Tower requesting clearance for emergency landing. The plane, an Airbus A340-300 with registry number RP-C3435, safely landed at 9:52 a.m. as several airport firetrucks waited on the ground. PAL, meanwhile, said the plane has to undergo operational assessment to determine technical concerns that led to its return to the airport.
