President Rodrigo Duterte has reorganized his Cabinet security cluster and named Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana as its head.
Duterte, through Executive Order (EO) 7 which he signed on October 14, designated Lorenzana as the chairman of the Cabinet cluster on security, justice, and peace, which is mandated to “ensure national peace and security, protect Philippine sovereignty, and uphold territorial integrity of the country.”
The new EO amended former President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s EO No. 43 (s. 2011), designating the executive secretary as chairperson of the security cluster.
“There is a need to designate the DND [Department of National Defense] Secretary as Chairperson of the Security, Justice and Peace Cluster in order to ensure that the thrust of the government to suppress and prevent lawless violence and win the fight against crimes, particularly illegal drugs and corruption, is achieved,” the EO read.
The other members of the cluster are the Executive Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, Interior Secretary, Foreign Affairs Secretary, Justice Secretary, National Security Adviser, and Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.
The National Security Council will serve as the cluster’s secretariat.
