Cagayan vice mayor faces P12M estafa case

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: The Regional Trial Court (RTC) here has issued a warrant of arrest against the vice mayor of Solana town for estafa in connection with a P12- million private corn deal with a milling company in 2013.

In his order, Judge Andrew Barcena of RTC Branch 17, said the court found “the existence of probable cause” after “personally evaluating the resolution of the provincial prosecutor” to indict Vice Mayor Meynard Carag.

The case stemmed from the complaint of Mindanao Grains Processing Corp. (MGPC) accusing Carag of estafa for “unfaithfulness or abuse of confidence” by misappropriating the money entrusted to him.

MGPC claimed that Carag was taken as agent in corn buying, as he had a corn buying business in 2012.
In 2013, Carag delivered P2.75 million worth of corn from the P13-million cash advance from MGPC, but failed to deliver again and did not show up, “despite repeated demands.”

In his counter-affidavit, Carag claimed that he did not receive the money “in trust” or “on commission or for administration” neither under any obligation to deliver or return the money.
