• Cagayan vice mayor shot dead

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: Vice Mayor Aaron Sampaga of Pamplona town was gunned down by unidentified men who sneaked into his friend’s house in Barangay Masi on Friday night.

The Pamplona police revealed that Sampaga and six of his men were at the house of the vice mayor’s friend along the riverside when two armed men appeared and opened fire at the group.

Sampaga did not reach the hospital alive. One of his men is being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

Police recovered six empty shells of M16 rifle and two empty shells of .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Sampaga, who ran under the Liberal Party (LP) in May, completed three terms as mayor of Pamplona. He defeated Freddie Rodriguez of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

His younger sister – Arnie Sampaga – won as mayor against outgoing Vice Mayor Edwin Ifurung (UNA) and independent candidate Melvin Vargas.

In 2014, Ifurung charged the slain mayor for the murder of his brother Edmund, a village councilman.

Police records show that Edmund was gunned down at a family-owned gas station in the village of Bidduang on July 3, 2014. Edmund’s killing has been admitted by Cristopher Gatotos, a former soldier.

Reports said Gatotos surrendered to the authorities through his uncle, Brig. Gen Abraham Bagasin, then deputy chief of the Northern Luzon Command.

Police said Gatotos alleged that Sampaga tried to silence him.
