The New Vois Association of the Philippines (NVAP) has said it is looking forward to the time when President-elect Rodrigo Duterte will finally implement a nationwide no-smoking policy.
Global Cancer ambassador and NVAP president Emer Rojas, a former smoker and cancer survivor, said that the group salutes the incoming president for his plan to adopt his long-standing no-smoking policy in Davao City.
“The smoke-free places implementation in Davao City being scaled up on a nationwide setting is simply laudable and the NVAP fully supports this pronouncement of presumptive President Duterte,” Rojas said.
“As cancers brought about by smoking continue to rise due to the prevalent use of cigarettes in the past years, it is high time we put a stop to this rising cancer trend,” Rojas stressed.
He added that the implementation of the smoke-free policy complements the existing anti-smoking policies, particularly the Graphic Health Warning (GHW) and Sin Tax laws.
“Having a nationwide no-smoking policy will certainly boost what the GHW and Sin Tax laws intend to achieve, which is to help discourage the public, especially the youth, from tobacco addiction,” he added.
Smoking-related diseases kill an estimated 10 Filipinos every hour or 87,600 every year, according to The Tobacco Atlas.
Under Duterte’s plan, smoking will be banned in enclosed public areas nationwide.
Smoking will only be allowed on streets that are 50 meters away from establishments.
