LICAB, NUEVA ECIJA: The incumbent vice mayor of this town, who was running for a post in the municipal council, died on Saturday night, with less than 48 hours before the midterm elections.
Vice Mayor Fred de la Cruz suffered from his third stroke and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Santo Domingo Provincial Hospital at about 10 p.m.
Mayor Willy Domingo of Licab related that de la Cruz was vying for a town councilor post under the banner of Nationalist People’s Coalition-Bagong Lakas ng Nueva Ecija (NPC-Balane).
The mayor, moreover, noted that de la Cruz managed to secure the endorsement of the influential Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) last week.
The INC-Nueva Ecija South said that, de la Cruz was one of its official candidates and that there was no one set to replace him.
Domingo, on the other hand, revealed that de la Cruz would be replaced by his sister, Potenciana de la Cruz, a retired elementary school teacher.
Potenciana is also endorsed by the mayor’s local Balane party.
Abraham Pascua of the Department of Interior and Local Government explained that de la Cruz’s post as incumbent vice mayor would be filled in by the town councilor who garnered the most number of votes during the previous elections.
De la Cruz’s successor would fill in the vacated seat until June 30, Pascua said.
The Commission on Elections, meanwhile, underlined that de la Cruz’s name will no longer be removed from the official ballots.
