CANDIDATES URGED TO FILE VALID ELECTION EXPENDITURES

COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. on Monday called on candidates to file valid Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs) to avoid disqualification. He said the Comelec en banc is considering not allowing erring candidates who overspent in the two previous polls to file their Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for the 2016 polls. Under the Omnibus Election Code, campaign overspending is an election violation, which is punishable with imprisonment from one to six years, disqualification to hold public office, and deprivation of the right of suffrage.
