Sixth seed Joshua Cano and seventh pick Argil Lance Canizares scored easy wins on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals of the boys’ 18-under in the 33rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open presented by Cebuana Lhuillier and Metro Global Holdings at the PCA indoor shell clay courts in Paco, Manila.
Cano, a University of the Philippines standout, blanked John Karl Bayot, 6-0, 6-0, while Canizares won via walkover against Lorelle Dave Tamano in their respective second-round games. Cano and Canizares were given opening-game byes.
Winning their first-round matches were John Kennete Arandia over Renz Antisoda, 6-4, 6-2; Miguel dela Paz over Michael Reyes, 3-0 (ret.); Reynaldo Pioquinto over Rappel Magdoboy, 6-0, 61; and Abdulqouhar Allian over Michael Tan (walkover).
Denise Bernardo and Chloe Mae Saraza led the opening-day winners in the girls’ division of the tournament supported by Dunlop, Fujidenzo/Whirlpool, Babolat, Hon. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, Head, Accel, Malate Bayview Mansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc., Philippine Prudential Life Insurance Company Inc. and Seno Hardware.
Bernardo won by default over Shyryn Salazar in the first round then nipped Julia Ignacio in the second round, 6-1, 6-0, of the 12-under class.
Gaby Zoleta, Justine Red Ballado and Justine Hannah Maneja also scored victories in their respective events. Zoleta whipped Ma. Patricia Lim, 6-1, 6-2; Ballado trouned Bettina Catoto, 6-0, 6-1; and Maneja won against Izzie Poblador via default.
The top-seeded Saraza, for her part, easily made it to the next round via walkover win against Terry Arejola in the girls’ 16-under event.
