ASSISTANT coach Glenn Capacio of KIA Motors Sorentos said that they won’t be a pushover team when they plunge into the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) 40th season action on October 18. KIA is one of the two expansion teams in the league.
Capacio, who will serve as one of the assistant coaches of Manny Pacquiao, the team’s playing head coach, said that the 12-man team is in high spirit after winning most of their exhibition games including one against popular squad Ginebra.
“It’s really hard to make any prediction about our chances since we’re a new team in the league,” said Capacio in an interview during a car show press conference at the World Trade Center in Pasay City where KIA Motors was one of the presenters.
Capacio also said that he is in constant communication with Pacquiao who is currently undergoing light training in his hometown in General Santos for his fight against unbeaten American Chris Algieri on November 22 at the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. “The players are all excited to see him and he’s happy with the way we won against different teams during exhibition games.”
Though Pacquiao did not participate in KIA Motors’ practices and exhibition games, KIA Sorentos Team Governor Ginia Domingo is hopeful that Pacman would play for and coach KIA in the opening game of the PBA 40th season.
“That’s what Manny [Pacquiao] and PBA Commissioner Chito Salud told us that he will play and coach in the opening,” said Domingo. “He is busy with his training and his flight was cancelled last Friday due to the typhoon.”
Besides Pacquiao, the other members of the KIA Sorentos team are 6’4 forward Mike Burtscher, Chito Jaime, Richard Alonzo, LA Revilla, former Rookie of the Year Rich Alvarez, Reil Cervantes, Rudy Lingga- nay, Kenneth Ighalo, Hans Thiele, Angelus Raymundo, JR Buensuceso and Eder Saldua, among others.
There is no prohibition against Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champion, playing and coaching in the PBA.
