Captured Negros rebel leader faces murder raps

SECURITY forces have captured over the weekend another ranking communist rebel leader on Negros Island during an operation in a remote village in Tanjay City, military reports said over the weekend.

Camp Aguinaldo identified the captured rebel as “Pediong/ Nasyo,” secretary general of the southern front, Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros (SEF, KR-N) of the Communist Party of the Philippines’ New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

“Pediong” or “Nasyo” was arrested by government troops through a joint checkpoint operation by the military and the police at about 7:50 p.m. on Friday at Brgy. Tugas in Tanjay City.

The reports said Pediong/Nasyo was arrested based on an arrest warrant for murder issued by the 7th Judicial Region Branch 41 regional trial court in Dumaguete City.

Former Negros Oriental rebels now in mainstream society said Pediong/Nasyo and other rebels victimized civilians and destroyed properties in the Southeastern part of Negros.

The murder case against him involved in the killing of late Narciso Bantoto Jr. in an ambush perpetrated by the NPA on January 17, 2014 at Brgy Tayak in Siaton, Negros Oriental.
