BAGUIO CITY: The National Nutrition Council (NNC) recently announced that the nutritional status of the Cordillera Administrative Region has been improving. Over the years the number of malnourished children in the region has decreased based on the 2011-2012 Operation Timbang (OPT) results. Every first quarter of the year the OPT weighs children zero to 71 months to identify malnourished ones. The increase in awareness of the proper care for children was one of the reasons for the improved nutrition status in the region. “We encourage parents to feed their children with food that is available in their area. We tell them that they don’t need to feed their children expensive foods,” the NNC said. Blanco also said that among the challenges they encountered were the superstitious beliefs or attitudes of caregivers and parents. The lauded their frontline workers, the barangay nutrition scholars and the media groups who air nutrition messages.
