• CAR, Region I to strictly enforce ASIN LAW

BAGUIO CITY: The National Nutrition Councils of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Region I moved to strengthen the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) to promote stricter enforcement of ASIN Law (Republic Act 8172), an Act Promoting Salt Iodization Nationwide. ASIN law, passed in December 1995, aims to promote the use of iodized salt to address lack of micronutrients, particularly Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). It also requires salt manufacturers to iodize the salts they produce and distribute. The 8th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) conducted in 2013 revealed significant decrease in both household awareness and utilization of iodized salt in the country. Ma. Eileen Blanco, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator for Region I, said the NNS-IDD is still a public health concern especially among pregnant, lactating women and the elderly.
