A quarrel over the coin game ‘Cara y Cruz’ triggered a riot at the maximum security area of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntilupa City that led to the death of an inmate and injury of 12 others.
NBP chief Superintendent Venancio Tesoro said the riot occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night inside Building 3 of the Maximum Security Compound.
Tesoro said their initial investigation showed the riot started when two inmates in one of the dormitories played ‘Cara y Cruz’ to while away the time at 11:30 p.m.
But, Tesoro said, the game turned ugly as the two inmates quarreled, with their respective gang mates coming to their aid.
“At least one died while most of those involved had been returned to their dormitory,” he added.
Tesoro said one of the inmates fired shots using an improvised shotgun and killed one of the inmates.
Three of the 12 wounded inmates are in critical condition, he said.
He said the warring gangs are from the Sputnik and Happy-Go-Lucky. The NBP has 2,000 Sputnik Gang members and 1,000 Happy-Go-Lucky Gang members.
Because of this, visits to the prison facility were indefinitely suspended as NBP officials are now searching for weapons amid information that improvised shotguns were used in the riot.
“We decided to suspend visits to inmates in the maximum security area,” Tesoro said.
Initial investigation conducted by NBP officials showed that inmates used various weapons, including bladed ones.
NBP officials have yet to determine how the weapon or the parts used to make it got inside the facility. RITCHIE A. HORARIO
