GlobalPort will be more of a running team in terms of strategy in the upcoming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 42 that begins on November 20.

Assistant coach John Cardel said the Batang Pier had upgraded their line-up during off season by acquiring slam dunk champion Nino “KG” Canaleta, veteran point guard Mike Cortez, big man Jay-R Quinahan and rookie Von Pessumal.

“It is more of a running game next season. We really like to employ a fast-paced game,” Cardel told The Manila Times in a phone interview. “We are hoping it will give us a positive outlook this season. I believe we can go deeper in the playoffs with this new line-up.”

Canaleta, who was earlier released by Mahindra, was signed by the Batang to support combo guard Terrence Romeo and playmaker Stanley Pringle.

Cortez that was acquired via trade from Blackwater would likely be a back-up point guard as Romeo and Pringle are expected to lead the Batang Pier anew this season.

GlobalPort also traded Anthony Jay Washington to Rain or Shine in exchange of Quinahan known for his soft touch in the perimeter and his inside game. Yousef Taha, Billy Mamaril, Rico Maierhofer and Doug Kramer will also fortify GlobalPort’s frontline.

The other members of the squad are Gab Banal, Anthony Semerad, Rey Guevarra, Karl Dehesa and veteran Sunday Salvacion.

The Batang Pier made it to the Philippine Cup semifinals last year but lost to Alaska.
